Written for growers from the ground up, often decades ago. These systems know what a ship week and a shrink credit are. The trade-off is age. Expect older interfaces that take real training to learn, systems that run on a server in the office, and data that can be hard to get out when you need it somewhere else.

Ask:

How old is the platform underneath, who will support it over the next decade, how long does it take your newest hires to learn the interface, and how does a fix actually reach you?

2 · GROWER VERTICALS ON A BIG PLATFORM

A grower layer on a big horizontal platform such as Salesforce or Microsoft Dynamics. You inherit real strengths: cloud infrastructure, security, an ecosystem. You also inherit a generic data model that wasn’t designed around grower workflows. Upgrades follow the platform’s release cycle, and pricing runs high once partners and customization are in. The customizations that make it fit your operation are also what lock you in.

Ask:

Who builds and supports the grower layer, what does the next major platform upgrade cost, and how many parties are in the room when something breaks?

3 · NEW ENTRANTS

Modern interfaces, quick onboarding, friendly pricing. The open question is depth. Living inventory takes years of edge cases to get right, from partial ship weeks and substitutions to shrink and retail programs. Some of these products will grow into real platforms and some won’t, so weigh how much of your operation you’d be betting on one.

Ask:

Can they demo the hardest workflow you run today instead of the dashboard? And how many operations your size run their whole business on it?

4 · POINT SOLUTIONS

Tools that do one job well: labor tracking, retail analytics, delivery routing, plant tags. Many strong operations run several. But none is the system of record. Every extra tool is another sync and another set of numbers, and someone on your team has to keep them matched.

Ask:

How does it connect to the rest of what you run, who maintains those integrations, and when this tool and your ERP disagree, which number do you trust?

Almost nobody in this market publishes pricing, but it isn’t a mystery. Each category prices a different way:

Every vendor says AI now. Ask these five questions.

  • 1 · WHAT DATA DOES IT ACT ON? Don’t ask. Test it live. Change one lot’s count mid-demo and ask the same availability question again. The new answer should come back fast and accurate.
  • 2 · CAN IT DO REAL WORK? Is it a chatbot, or can it do real, complex work? Hand it a customer’s order list as a spreadsheet or a CSV, then check whether the orders exist in the system afterward. Ask it to build a report you’d actually use. Ask it to find an order and everything connected to it: the customer, the items, the ship date.
  • 3 · WHERE ARE THE HUMAN GATES? Not every AI action should wait for a person. Ask which actions it takes on its own and which ones wait for a person. It should always be clear when AI made a change, and it should never be able to do anything destructive.
  • 4 · CAN YOU AUDIT WHAT IT DID? Any AI taking action should be logged and traceable. Ask to see the log for a change the assistant made: what it read, what it changed, who made or approved it, and when. You’ll want that trail the first time a count looks wrong.
  • 5 · HOW FAST DOES THE VENDOR SHIP? The vendor’s own product is the proof. Ask any vendor what changed in the last ninety days and how customers heard about it.

What does grower ERP software cost?
Almost no vendor publishes prices, so compare how each vendor charges instead: per-user pricing grows with headcount, operation-based pricing stays flat as your team changes, and module-based pricing depends on which capabilities you run. Always price year three, not just year one, and include implementation, migration, integrations, support, and upgrades in the comparison.
How long does switching grower ERP systems take?
For most vendors, especially legacy systems and platform verticals, plan on months and sometimes more than a year. For a modern, scalable, AI-native platform, it might only take a week or two. Either way the work is the same: migrate your data, train your team on real records, and run in parallel until you trust your numbers. Time the cutover to your operational cycle, and ask every vendor what self-service training and documentation your team gets.
What is the difference between a purpose-built grower ERP and one built on a big platform?
The key question is whether the system was built for growers from the ground up. A purpose-built system was, so it handles grower workflows in detail. Age is a separate question: some purpose-built systems are decades old, and some, like Work Suite, are modern and scalable. A platform vertical gets modern infrastructure from a large business platform, but grower workflows live in a layer on top, and support and changes often involve both the platform company and an implementation partner.
Are point solutions enough to run a growing operation?
A point solution does one job well, like retail analytics or labor tracking. The challenge is integrations and user experience: each tool has to connect to the rest of what you run, and your team has to jump between systems that each work differently. As operations grow, most end up wanting those jobs done inside one system, seamlessly.
